Remedies for Insomnia
Are you sick of your pattern of not getting enough sleep? Are you looking for things you can try without taking sleeping pills? Let’s face it-insomnia can effect your whole life. Not sleeping at night carries into the next day, leaving you tired, irritable, and stressed. And what’s worse is the anxiety you face when you try to fall asleep the next night. What a vicious cycle!
There is hope! After all, insomnia is certainly not a new problem and many people have found remedies that works for them. People have suffered from insomnia for centuries and have found many ways to relieve their insomnia symptoms, resulting in a variety of remedies for insomia.
People have found that remedies for insomnia may include: dietary changes, changes in your daily routine, working out at a different time, developing a new environment for sleep and/or changing your routine at bedtime, and a variety of herbal remedies.
Dietary changes may mean giving up that cup of coffee after dinner. Your spouse may be able to handle that caffeine after dinner but your body may process it differently. Try restricting your caffeine intake to early in the day and find a new (caffeine free) beverage that you like to drink later in the day. You may also look into foods that are calming to your body and consume them in the evening (warm milk, chamomile tea, strawberries, etc.).
Do you work out during the day? Exercising early in the day allows your body to relax later in the day. And if you’re exercising after work or in the evening, your body may not be able to calm down by the time you feel you should go to bed. And if you don’t already exercise during the day, try to fit in some type of exercise early in the day to help tire your body out. In addition to the great physical effects exercise gives you, it is also a great stress reducer. If your insomnia is stress related, exercise will serve double duty for you.
Developing a new habit and/or routine at bedtime may actually help you to get to sleep. “Self-hypnosis” or having relaxation techniques to use at bedtime may be just what you need. You can find more about relaxation techniques on our Hypnosis page.
